Annual General Meeting
12 December 2010
The 2010 golfing season turned out to be a great one weather-wise allowing an early start in April and prime golf conditions throughout the summer months. The course conditions bounced-back quickly from the mild winter, and the course was in mid-summer form in May.  The focus for the course maintenance was to expand upon improvements from years past and further refine the course’s appearance and playability.  Our club has spent over half a century enhancing the course’s fairways, greens, tees, and the surrounding forests and water features to create optimal playing conditions while accentuating the natural beauty of the landscape.  It is this type of focus on continuous improvement that the membership expects and appreciates.
Financially, the club continued to benefit from the diligent work of the General Manager, Dave Brewster and the management staff of Donna Lavigne, Adam Chamberlain, and Gilbert Vienneau.
Revenues were up and expenses minimized as we continued to experience the benefit of careful planning, monitoring and controlling of the operating budget.  The 2011 budget has been given the same attention, with guidance and oversight provided by the executive and its various committees.  The establishment of the Finance Committee in 2006 has played a substantial role in allowing the Board to make informed and responsible decisions that support the future sustainability of the course.  The club has now enjoyed four successive years of positive net earnings and positive cash flow while reducing long-term debt and meeting capital demands.
Pro Shop sales continue to improve under the management of our Head Pro, Adam Chamberlain, as this season’s sales surpassed the record season of 2009.  Food and Beverage revenues exceeded expectations, as the volume of events in 2010 increased tremendously from the year previous (69 events in 2010, 42 in 2009).  Green fees and power cart rentals continued to significantly contribute to revenues, which can be attributed to the great course conditions and favourable weather.
Our Board of Directors will be changing in 2011, as several members of the executive have completed their terms with great distinction, namely Rachel Guidry, Janice Haché, and Robert Beaudet.  We thank these members for their years of service, their dedication, their efforts, and their commitment to the continuous improvement of the course.  The Board also welcomes its newly elected directors:  Celia Doucet Clark will be ladies’ president, and Brenda Parrott will be the new ladies’ club captain.  These members will join the existing directors to form a diverse, multi-disciplined team ready to serve the membership.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire staff at Gowan Brae, the Board of Directors, and most of all the membership for making 2010 a very successful golfing season.  In closing, I would like to reiterate the sentiment of past Presidents:  the course belongs to you, the member.  The success of the course depends upon your participation and cooperation.  Last year, Gowan Brae again enjoyed the largest membership in the province, and hopefully with your continued support in 2011 the course will continue to grow and prosper.
This annual general meeting marks the end of my two-year tenure as your President.  Serving the membership and representing Gowan Brae has been an incredible experience and a tremendous source of pride.  We are truly fortunate to have this course in our community -- it is a precious gift – and to participate in shaping the course’s present and helping to ensure its future sustainability has been an honour and a privilege.  I am truly grateful to have served you in this capacity.
Tim O’Connell
